Situated on the south-west coast of the island you will find the historical, former capital of Cyprus, Paphos. Today this popular resort has grown in size and is a bustling tourist area with everything to offer. Legend has it that Paphos is the birthplace of the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. Now divided into two major quarters: Ktima, the old town on the sea terrace - the upper part of the town, a maze of interweaving streets which lead to the shopping area. The House of Dionysos, the ancient burial chambers at the Tombs of the Kings, and the Byzantine castle, are just a sample of the many fascinating historical artefacts worth a visit. Kato Pafos, by the sea, is built around the picturesque medieval port with its busy harbour as the focal point - lined with open-air cafés and fish tavernas, it contains most of the bars, discos and luxury hotels of the city. Just across the water lies a 16th century Venetian fortress. Fishing trips and sight-seeing tours of the fragrant and scenic Troodos mountains and Akamas peninsular (an area of outstanding natural beauty and ecological significance) are available if you wish to venture further afield. The best beach, by far, is found at Coral Bay.

Situated to the north of Paphos and now an established resort within its own right, Coral Bay is ideal for laid-back beach holidays. There are a number of large hotels, souvenir shops and mini markets for daily provisions as well as a number of attractive private villas dotted amongst the area. This is also a great base for exploring the west of the island and all that it has to offer. Awarded the European Blue Flag, the actual bay itself is by far the best natural beach in the area.
