The History
This beautiful, strong island has a story; one that spans 9,000 years and reads like a blockbuster. As the legendary birthplace for both Aphrodite and Adonis (yes, the Gods use to enjoy Cyprus holidays too), Cyprus is home to legend as well as a rich historical past. Domination by many and varied rulers have all left their mark here. Foreign Kings, Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar all played a part, with England's Richard the Lionheart following the trend during the Crusades. Control of Cyprus was handed to Great Britain in 1878 who later colonized the island. Cyprus went on to gain her independence from the UK but she retained a very British touch, evident to this day. You can't help feeling at home in a country where English is the second language, driving is on the left, signs are in English as well as the native language and household names pepper the high street!
The Country
Cyprus holidays are drenched in year-round sunshine, an enviable climate awaits you. Spring brings fragrant flowers and a mild autumn extends well into November. During July and August temperatures can be well above 30 degrees centigrade. In the winter, from the beginning of January to the end of March, Mount Olympus turns into a ski resort and, due to the coastal warmth, it is possible to ski in the mountains then swim in the blue Mediterranean all in the same day! From citrus groves and scenic mountain backdrops with scented pine-clad forests, to gently shelving sandy beaches with sea water as warm as a bath, Cyprus holidays are a true feast for the senses.
The People
As warm as their weather, Cypriot hospitality is second to none. The majority of Cypriots speak and understand the English language, yet traditions and customs are carried on throughout generations and the close-knit family circle remains an integral part of day to day life. The church still plays an important role in the lives of the Cypriots where the main religion is Greek Orthodox. The attitude is laid-back, warm-hearted and generous, as you will soon learn for yourself! Cyprus holidays are home holidays from home.
